ID:MPI_HUMAN DESCRIPTION: RecName: Full=Mannose-6-phosphate isomerase; EC=5.3.1.8; AltName: Full=Phosphohexomutase; AltName: Full=Phosphomannose isomerase; Short=PMI; FUNCTION: Involved in the synthesis of the GDP-mannose and dolichol-phosphate-mannose required for a number of critical mannosyl transfer reactions. CATALYTIC ACTIVITY: D-mannose 6-phosphate = D-fructose 6- phosphate. COFACTOR: Binds 1 zinc ion per subunit (By similarity). PATHWAY: Nucleotide-sugar biosynthesis; GDP-alpha-D-mannose biosynthesis; alpha-D-mannose 1-phosphate from D-fructose 6- phosphate: step 1/2. SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Cytoplasm (Probable). TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Expressed in all tissues, but more abundant in heart, brain and skeletal muscle. DISEASE: Defects in MPI are the cause of congenital disorder of glycosylation type 1B (CDG1B) [MIM:602579]; also known as carbohydrate-deficient glycoprotein syndrome type Ib (CDGS1B). Congenital disorders of glycosylation are metabolic deficiencies in glycoprotein biosynthesis that usually cause severe mental and psychomotor retardation. They are characterized by under- glycosylated serum glycoproteins. CDG1B is clinically characterized by protein-losing enteropathy. SIMILARITY: Belongs to the mannose-6-phosphate isomerase type 1 family. WEB RESOURCE: Name=GeneReviews; URL="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/GeneTests/lab/gene/MPI";
The RNAfold program from the Vienna RNA Package is used to perform the secondary structure predictions and folding calculations. The estimated folding energy is in kcal/mol. The more negative the energy, the more secondary structure the RNA is likely to have.

The pictures above may be empty if there is no ModBase structure for the protein. The ModBase structure frequently covers just a fragment of the protein. You may be asked to log onto ModBase the first time you click on the pictures. It is simplest after logging in to just click on the picture again to get to the specific info on that model.
Orthologous Genes in Other Species
Orthologies between human, mouse, and rat are computed by taking the best BLASTP hit, and filtering out non-syntenic hits. For more distant species reciprocal-best BLASTP hits are used. Note that the absence of an ortholog in the table below may reflect incomplete annotations in the other species rather than a true absence of the orthologous gene.
