FUNCTION: Adhesive glycoprotein that mediates cell-to-cell and cell-to-matrix interactions. Ligand for CD36 mediating antiangiogenic properties.
SUBUNIT: Homotrimer; disulfide-linked. Interacts (via the TSP type I repeats) with CD36; the interaction conveys an antiangiogenic effect. Interacts (via the TSP type I repeats) with HRG; the interaction blocks the antiangiogenic effect of THBS2 with CD36 (By similarity). Can bind to fibrinogen, fibronectin, laminin and type V collagen.

TISSUE SPECIFICITY: High expression in invertebral disk tissue.
DISEASE: Genetic variations in THBS2 may be a cause of susceptibility to intervertebral disk disease (IDD) [MIM:603932]; also known as lumbar disk herniation (LDH). IDD is one of the most common musculo-skeletal disorders and the predominant cause of low-back pain and unilateral leg pain.
