ID:TIM9_HUMAN DESCRIPTION: RecName: Full=Mitochondrial import inner membrane translocase subunit Tim9; FUNCTION: Mitochondrial intermembrane chaperone that participates in the import and insertion of multi-pass transmembrane proteins into the mitochondrial inner membrane. May also be required for the transfer of beta-barrel precursors from the TOM complex to the sorting and assembly machinery (SAM complex) of the outer membrane. Acts as a chaperone-like protein that protects the hydrophobic precursors from aggregation and guide them through the mitochondrial intermembrane space. SUBUNIT: Heterohexamer; composed of 3 copies of TIMM9 and 3 copies of TIMM10/TIM10A, named soluble 70 kDa complex. The complex forms a 6-bladed alpha-propeller structure and associates with the TIMM22 component of the TIM22 complex. Interacts with multi-pass transmembrane proteins in transit. Also forms a complex composed of TIMM9, TIMM10/TIM10A and FXC1/TIM10B. INTERACTION: P62072:TIMM10; NbExp=5; IntAct=EBI-1200370, EBI-1200391; SUBCELLULAR LOCATION: Mitochondrion inner membrane; Peripheral membrane protein; Intermembrane side. TISSUE SPECIFICITY: Ubiquitous, with highest expression in heart, kidney, liver and skeletal muscle. DOMAIN: The twin CX3C motif contains 4 conserved Cys residues that form 2 disulfide bonds in the mitochondrial intermembrane space. However, during the transit of TIMM9 from cytoplasm into mitochondrion, the Cys residues probably coordinate zinc, thereby preventing folding and allowing its transfer across mitochondrial outer membrane (Probable). SIMILARITY: Belongs to the small Tim family.
The RNAfold program from the Vienna RNA Package is used to perform the secondary structure predictions and folding calculations. The estimated folding energy is in kcal/mol. The more negative the energy, the more secondary structure the RNA is likely to have.

The pictures above may be empty if there is no ModBase structure for the protein. The ModBase structure frequently covers just a fragment of the protein. You may be asked to log onto ModBase the first time you click on the pictures. It is simplest after logging in to just click on the picture again to get to the specific info on that model.
Orthologous Genes in Other Species
Orthologies between human, mouse, and rat are computed by taking the best BLASTP hit, and filtering out non-syntenic hits. For more distant species reciprocal-best BLASTP hits are used. Note that the absence of an ortholog in the table below may reflect incomplete annotations in the other species rather than a true absence of the orthologous gene.
